Small independent publishers are supposedly on the way out but there is one for whom saying cheese has led to smiles.

Independent Melbourne publisher, Purple Egg has picked up the Michelin Best Food Book Silver Award for their publication Chalk and Cheese by Will Studd, fighting off competition from major publishing houses around the world.

The ceremony, at the 1999 Jacob’s Creek World Food Media Award at Tasting Australia, was attended by the world’s top publishers and food writers. ‘This award for Chalk and Cheese is fine praise indeed,’ said the author after th win.

Announcing the Winners of the World Food ‘Ladles’.

Forty winners of gold, silver and bronze ‘Ladles’ were chosen from 323 entries, representing the cream of the worlds food and wine media on television, in newspaper and magazines, books, photography, CD-Roms and internet web sites.

In television, the big winners were British-made shows. In the Qantas Airways Best Television Food Show, the gold ladle was awarded to Antonio Caluccio’s Southern Italian Feast (BBCTV UK), silver to Nick Nairn’s Island Harvest (BBCTV UK), and the two bronze awards, one to United Tastes of Rick Stein also won a gold Ladle for a segment on BBCTV’s Food and Drink in the Global Communication Stratergists Best television Food Segment Within A Show. The other winners in that category were from Australia, with silver going to Good Morning Australia featuring Gabriele Gaté (Network Ten AUS) and bronze to Better Homes and Gardens TV Show with Belinda Jeffrey (Seven Network AUS).

Wine show winners are Vintner’s Table with Jancis Robinson (BBCTV UK) (gold), Floyd Uncorked with Keith Floyd (Channel 5 UK) (silver), and Wine Lovers’ Guide to Australia (SBS Television AUS)(bronze).

Australia and the US dominated the book awards. In the Michelin Best Food Book section, winners were: gold to Culinaria - The United States (USA), silver to Chalk and Cheese by Will Studd (AUS), and bronzes to Banquet: Ten Courses to Harmony by Annette Shun Wah and Greg Aitkin (AUS) and The Pudding that Took A Thousand Cooks by Michael Symons (AUS).

The KitchenAid Best Hard Cover Recipe Book awards were won by In Nonna’s Kitchen by Carol Field (USA)(gold); Spice by Christine Mansfield(USA)(silver); and Charlie Trotter’s Desserts (USA)(bronze).

The KitchenAids Best Soft Cover Recipe Book Ladles went to Marie Clare Dining by Donna Hay (AUS)(gold); The Millennium Cookbook (USA)(silver); and Good Food by Anneka Manning (AUS)(bronze).
