Mietta's Review
In what was a Japanese restaurant, of which the restaurant archiologist can still detect traces, in the refurbished Rivoli Cinema precinct, another Malaysian restaurant with jazz in the Simon Goh stable, has opened. Traditional dishes at Camberwell prices. The situation is more upmarket the Simon's other operations but one can still eat cheaply if one chooses carefully. Fast service.

The Age Sunday Night Dinner Janne Apelgren, "This modern Asian/Malaysian will feed you well and warmly before, after or instead of the movie"

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 "THANKS to co-owner Simon Goh's pioneering efforts with the Chinta chain, many Melburnians freely associate rapid-fire Malaysian cuisine with jazzy tunes. Now there's a new project that tentatively continues the theme"

HERALD SUN Donna Coutts score 16/20, 7/9/04 Part of the precinct that has sprung up around the revamped Rivoli Cinema in Camberwell, it's a step up from a cafe and a welcome contrast to the half-dozen same-same bistros around the corner on Camberwell Rd. Prices range from low to whoa.""

The Age, Agenda, 29/2/04, John Lethlean,'the food at Monk & Me is fine without exactly transporting you to Penang...Service staff get about their work at a reasonable clip and there's a wine list from which to choose your bevvies, although it's harldy inspiring. In other words, the whole thing leaves an impression-on balance- of more style than substance.'

The Age, eat streets, 22/2/04, John Lethlean,'Simon (Chinta Ria) Goh's return to the Melbourne marketplace sees him in stylish Malaysian mode. Have a look as the sambal bilis, whitebait snap-fried and tossed with a heady chilli and prawn paste "dressing".And the name? Think Thelonious.'

Or perhaps ...

Geebung Polo Club (03) 9882 7388, 85 Auburn Rd, Auburn - At night there are queues of young people for a drink and the live entertainment. At lunch there's a much more mixed crowd of business people.

Italy 1 (Camberwell) 9804 0944, 823 Burke Rd, Camberwell - It's a popular local lunch and dinner place for good standard Italian dishes. Faux-Italian atmosphere done well.

Jacksons (03) 9819 4939, 336 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn - There is a warm relaxed feel to this long narrow restaurant with its red brick walls and soft lighting.

Kabana Bros (03) 9891 1377, 623 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn

Monk & Me 9813 3261, 9 Evans Pl, Hawthorn East - An upmarket Malaysian restaurant with jazz from Simon Goh (Chinta Ria). Fast pre-theatre service.

Nataraj (03) 9882 6872, 213 Camberwell Rd, Hawthorn East - A regular describes Nataraj as cosmpolitan. Certainly that's the aim of the menu at this long-established Camberwell restaurant.

The Undertaker Bar & Restaurant 9818 3944, 329 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn - The Undertaker is doing a lot for the life of Hawthorn with its brace of bars and restaurant below
