Mietta's Review
This very plush restaurant has been on the Canberra scene since 1968 - it is part of history. The service is professional, and the food is well priced considering the setting. The wine list is good, and changes regularly. Lunch is in the attached Rose Garden Cafe which has outside seating and a simplified menu. The views of the rose garden vary with the time of year. The ownership changed in early 2004.

Other published opinions

Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 12/20 "This Canberra landmark turns 40 in 2008 and deserves a cheer. Prices have dropped to draw in cost-conscious political lunch crowds"

Canberra Times Bryan Martin, 4-07-07 Score: 14/20 "A great place for a relaxed evening of uncomplicated but interesting food in beautiful, timeless surroundings."

Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2007 Score: 13/20 "This Canberra icon (it turns 40 in 2008) has seen many a long political lunch and still hosts journalists into the wee hours on budget night. The stand-alone building is all glass walls and modernist design, with fern- fringed surrounds giving a lovely, secluded feeling to the warm timber space."

SMH Good Food Guide 2006 Score 13/20 "this Canberra institution opposite the rose garden has a new lease of life under chef Christian Hauberg, and the floor shares his fresh, relaxed yet well-versed approach. With floor-to-ceiling windows surrounded by a fern garden, the overall feeling is of feasting in an intimate, secretive forest."

Or perhaps ...

Bookplate Cafe 6262 1154, National Library Of Australia, Parkes Pl, Parkes - Gorgeous stained glass windows by artist Leonard French are an overwhelming attraction here

Cafe in the House (02) 6270 8156, Old Parliament House, King George Tce, Parkes - The art-deco elegance of the architecture and interiors of Old Parliament House are worth a visit. The cafe and bar are what was the non members canteen

High Court Cafe (02) 6273 2836, High Court Of Australia, Parkes Pl, Parkes

The Lobby (02) 6273 1563, King George Tce, Parkes - This very plush restaurant has been on the Canberra scene since 1968 - it is part of history.

Mega Bites Cafe (02) 6270 2913, Questacon Science & Technology Centre, King Edward Tce, Parkes - The food is fair and the scene vibrant, matching the techno-architecture as much as the Parliamentary Zone permits.

Sculpture Gardens Restaurant (02) 6240 6660, National Gallery Of Australia, Parkes Pl, Parkes - Beautiful situation in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery.

Waters Edge (02) 6273 5066, Commonwealth Place, 400 Parkes Pl North, Parkes - New ownership takes Canberra's most famous fine diner to less rarefied areas (and prices).
